Movement is Medicine: How the Y Can Help with Arthritis Relief

Did you know that arthritis impacts more than 50 million Americans, including 300,000 children? Arthritis, a condition that causes inflammation and stiffness in the joints, can affect people of all ages and make daily activities challenging. But there’s good news! Research has shown that one of the most effective ways to manage arthritis is through regular movement.

Why Movement Matters
While arthritis may cause discomfort, staying active is actually key to managing pain, increasing mobility, and improving overall quality of life. Physical activity helps strengthen the muscles around your joints, increases flexibility, and reduces stiffness. In fact, exercise has been described as a "miracle treatment" for arthritis. However, knowing how to move safely with arthritis is crucial to avoid causing further damage.

The Y is Here to Help!
At the Y, we understand the importance of movement in managing arthritis, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our programs are designed to be accessible for all fitness levels, including those living with arthritis. Whether you're looking for low-impact exercise classes like water aerobics or gentle yoga, or want to explore guided strength training to build joint-supporting muscles, the Y offers a variety of options that can help you stay active and healthy.

At the Moline-East Moline YMCA we offer many group exercise classes and specialized aquatic programs in our Family/Therapy pool, which reduces pressure on the joints while allowing for a full range of motion. Moving in water also helps to alleviate pain and improve circulation, making it an excellent option for people with arthritis.
